Event Description

Tatiana Liubchenko’s in-depth workshop will explore the historical and cultural significance of the Mariupol Greeks, a unique ethnic group with a complex linguistic and cultural identity. Her comprehensive analysis of the Mariupol Greeks will focus on two distinct communities: the Rumei, who speak five dialects of the Greek language, and the Urums, who communicate in four dialects of the Turkic branch of the Altaic language family. The workshop will concentrate on the historical trajectory of the Mariupol Greeks, the challenges they have faced, and current efforts to preserve their cultural and linguistic heritage. Liubchenko will examine the impact of Soviet policies on the Mariupol Greeks and initiatives to revitalize their traditions amid contemporary challenges.
