An ethnographic documentary by Nicoletta Demetriou

The documentary will be introduced by its producer.

In mid-twentieth-century Cyprus, weddings and religious festivals were filled with the sounds of fkiolarides: the island’s traditional music fiddlers. As the decades progressed and Cyprus’s cultural landscape changed, this class of musicians slowly died out. While much of the fiddlers’ music has been recorded and transcribed, their life stories have not. The Cypriot Fiddler documentary does precisely that: it traces the lives of traditional music fiddlers from both sides of the Cypriot divide for the very first time.

"The Cypriot Fiddler" documentary was produced in 2016 by Nicoletta Demetriou, and was entirely funded through a crowd-sourcing campaign on Kickstarter. In 2015, ‘The Cypriot Fiddler’ project was chosen as a case study by the British Academy, and was profiled on the British Academy’s blog.
