The Seeger Center hosts the 2024 Modern Greek Studies Association Symposium
The Seeger Center is thrilled to host the 28th biennial Modern Greek Studies Association Symposium from Oct. 17-20.
The Symposium features panels on a range of subjects, including political and social history, anthropology, literature, and culture – and an awards ceremony, concert, and keynote address.
As we look forward to four days of intellectual exchange and fellowship, we also reflect on Princeton's rich history of fostering Hellenic studies and the University's longstanding ties to the MGSA.
In 1968, acclaimed translator of Modern Greek poetry Edmund Keeley, the inaugural Charles Barnwell Straut Class of 1923 Professor of English, co-founded the MGSA at Princeton to promote the study of the field.
In addition, Princeton hosted the first MGSA Symposium from Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 1969. The theme was “Modern Greek Literature and its European Background.” Panel topics included “University Programs in Modern Greek,” “The Literary Language, 1453-1800,” and the poetry of C.P. Cavafy.
The MGSA returned to campus in 1988 for an ad hoc conference to celebrate 20 years of the association and consider future directions, and again in 1999 for the 30th-anniversary MGSA Symposium.
