Classical Philosophy Reading Group
Princeton graduate students discuss Aristotelean philosophy with their Greek counterparts in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.“Aristotle, Poetics 1-16”
Crete, Greece
Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 12, 2024
The 2024 summer workshop on Aristotle will take place from Monday, July 8th to Friday, July 12th, in Plakias, Crete, Greece.
The general topic of the workshops is Aristotle’s philosophy of nature, very broadly conceived, but in some years the group tackles Aristotle’s ethical and political works.
The program aims to give graduate students from different academic backgrounds the opportunity to collaborate closely and intensively with one another in an atmosphere that is more informal and relaxed than regular seminars during the academic year.
Normally, ten graduate students and three to five faculty from Princeton participate. The group will be joined by ten Greek graduate students and two faculty from Greece. (This year, exceptional interest in the program has meant that we have 12 students from Princeton and 12 from Greece.) Princeton students are paired with their Greek counterparts and encouraged to develop collaboratively an interpretation of the text under discussion and present it during the workshop. The workshop also aims to promote the collaboration of faculty members and students, helping the latter to hone the skills necessary for their own scholarly research.
Funding for this event has been generously provided by the Stanley J. Seeger ’52 Center for Hellenic Studies, and the Departments of Classics and Philosophy
