A Land of Light and Shadows: Modern Greek Literature and Photography

June 5 - July 14, 2023

Eduardo Cadava, Philip Mayhew Professor of English

All photography belongs to the sun, which is why, for George Seferis, it belongs to Greece. This seminar, based in Athens, traces the history of the relation between Modern Greek literature and photography. The course considers the ways in which Greek photographers and poets — including, among others, Seferis, Odysseus Elytis and Yannis Ritsos — reflect on the connection between Greece and photography. Students will interact with renowned Greek photographers and enroll in weekly photography workshops. Excursions within Athens include the Benaki Museum and the George Seferis Photographic Archive. Daytrips and overnight excursions may include Delphi, Mycenae and Crete. Students will have an opportunity to take introductory modern Greek lessons.
