This course is for students who have a solid knowledge of ancient or medieval Greek and want to study Modern Greek as a foreign language. By developing their existing skills through a study of the syntactical, grammatical, and lexical evolution of the Greek language from ancient to modern, the course aims to teach students to respond to basic communicative situations, when travelling to Greece for study or research, and to help them build the necessary foundations for reading literature and scholarship in Greek. We will focus on contemporary Greek culture, and read a wide variety of literary and nonliterary texts.
