The surviving funerary objects from the ancient Mediterranean all stand as individual and communal efforts to grapple with loss, to focus the process of mourning, and to connect with the deceased. The course explores major themes within the context of Greek and Roman funerary art, including the contexts of funerary rituals and monuments; representation and the deceased; myth and funerary art; imperial power and death; and memory, sensation, and mourning.
