Requirements
To qualify for the HLS Minor, a student is required to take at least five classes cross-listed with Hellenic Studies: (a) our “gateway” HLS seminar (HLS 222), which is obligatory for all students pursuing the Minor; (b) three HLS cross-listed courses (200-level or above); and (c) a 400-level HLS cross-listed seminar. For more information about requirements (b) and (c), see below.
There is no independent work required for the Hellenic Studies Minor. Students, however, are encouraged to consider writing their junior paper or senior thesis on a Hellenic topic.
Students’ progress and coursework toward the Minor in Hellenic Studies will be monitored regularly by the Director of the Program in Hellenic Studies.
Hellenic Studies Courses
All Hellenic Studies cross-listed courses will be classified with one of three designations: “HSR” (History, Society, Religion); “LLP” (Language, Literature, Philosophy); and “VMM” (Visual and Material Culture, Music). In special cases, courses may bear more than one designation. For the three 200-level or above HLS classes required for the Minor (requirement (b), above), students will have to take at least one course from each “HSR”, “LLP”, or “VMM” designation.
Course designations for HLS minors can be found HERE.
At least one of the three required courses must be on a topic or theme in the Late Antique, medieval/Byzantine, renaissance/early modern, modern and/or contemporary period.
While there is no language requirement for the HLS Minor, we strongly encourage our HLS Minor students to study Greek, ancient, medieval and/or modern. Specifically, MOG 107, HLS 400, or CLG 240 will fulfill the “LLP” requirement.
Hellenic Studies 400-level Seminar
Each year, students may choose from a number of HLS 400-level seminars designated as approved for fulfilling the requirement towards the HLS Minor. For the 400-level seminar students would be required to produce a research paper of significant length (20-25 pages) on a Hellenic topic.
On-Site Study and Research
It is our hope that Hellenic Studies Minor students will take advantage of summer activities at the Princeton Athens Center (language courses in ancient and Modern Greek, summer seminars, and other events). HLS Minor students in good standing will have priority in funding by the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies to support their summer study and research in Greece.
Student who are interested in pursuing a minor in Hellenic Studies should complete this form.
